WHAT IS STRETCH FILM?

Commonly referred to as pallet wrap or stretch wrap, stretch film is typically made from a type of plastic called linear low-density polyethylene, or LLDPE. The final product after a series of manipulations during manufacturing is an extremely thin, elastic-like, plastic. It is wrapped around products or pallets, either by hand or by machine, to secure the load before it is stored or shipped.

There is a wide range of options available, with varying levels, widths, and gauges. The specs you need will vary based on a few factors, including your pallet type, product, and application. If there are so many options, how do you know what to use?  Our team of Packaging Specialists is ready to tailor the product offering to your specific needs and application.

WHY DO I NEED STRETCH FILM?

When the right stretch film is properly applied to your pallet, it will ensure the load stays secure during transport and storage, minimizing the risk of any shifting or damage. A poorly wrapped pallet? That is a recipe for disaster and can cost you – big time. You can read more about the impact of poor packaging in our recent blog Minimizing Inventory Loss. Further benefits are protection against weather and dust and debris, protect your products from tampering, all while keeping your crew safe in the warehouse and on the road.

The variety of options available also make it a product that can be very specialized for your needs. Some of our customers require UV film to protect their product from the sun’s rays, while others require specialized ventilated film to ensure their product has sufficient airflow in transportation.

APPLICATION MATTERS

Once the film selection has been made with one of our trusted specialists, the next step is application. For the film to do its job correctly, the user (or machine) must ensure the proper coverage, enough tension, and the right amount of stretch.

The main characteristic of stretch film is in the name – stretch – and it should do just that.

The film has memory, so stretching is what will give you the taut secure wrap that a pallet needs for transport.

HAND OR MACHINE?

Application can be done by hand or machine, and your choice depends on space, pallet volume, and load type. If done by hand, warehouse staff will manually apply the film to the pallet. Using handles can help ensure ergonomic application, but proper wrapping and employee safety rely on expertise.

When it comes to application by  machinery, there are more options available from semi-automatic to robotic. These machines have gears and settings which will determine the speed of the turn, the wrap’s tension, and the amount of stretch given to the film. When used correctly and with the right film, these settings ensure a secure wrap.

Having a specialist who understands these machines is essential, and our team has seen it all.

EFFICIENCY IS TOP PRIORITY

In the fast paced industry of logistics, efficiency is not a luxury – its a necessity. When applied correctly, it can maximize both time and cost savings. As an added benefit, efficient use will reduce waste , which is increasingly more important as we recognize the impact plastic has on the environment, especially when not properly recycled or repurposed.

Masterful use of stretch film isn’t just about optimizing your resources but safeguarding your products and profits. With DUMAK, this does not have to come at an extreme price tag – we are not only experts in selection and application, but our pricing is unbeatable thanks to our relationships with our preferred vendors.
